TRAINING ACTIVITIES

Each academic year the PhD programme will offer a series of Transversal and Specific Training Activities aimed at enabling PhD students to obtain the competences described in the programme. These activities will be carried out mainly through the courses and seminars organised in the Programme's reference Master's Degree: Master's Degree in Rural Development Project Planning and Sustainable Management.
The activities will be published and updated on the programme's website, and can also be consulted at the following addresses:
These activities will be carried out under the supervision of the tutor and thesis supervisor, and must be included in the Activities Document that the student must submit annually to the Academic Committee of the programme, being essential, in any case, their presentation before the deposit of the thesis to accredit their completion.

COMPULSORY

PREPARATION AND PUBLICATION OF RESEARCH ARTICLES

BASIC DATA
Nº of hours: 160

DESCRIPTION

Justification:
The main mode of transmission of scientific knowledge is the publication of research articles. Therefore, during the doctoral programme, it is considered essential for the PhD student to become familiar with the procedure and structure of publishing a scientific article.

Brief description of the activity:
The PhD student will actively participate in the planning and preparation of a scientific article, on a specific aspect of their thesis work, and will submit it for publication to a journal indexed in the Journal Citation Report (JCR). The PhD student will follow the entire review process until its final publication.

Time planning:
The planning of this activity may vary depending on the knowledge generated by each student, however, it is recommended that PhD students produce scientific articles for publication from the second year onwards, in the case of full-time students, and from the third year onwards, in the case of part-time students.

Learning outcomes:
Students will become familiar with the whole process involved in publishing an article in an indexed scientific journal in which they will present their research results.

Associated competences:
All core competences (CB11 to CB16) and all personal skills and abilities competences (CA01 to CA06) (section 2).

Languages of instruction:
Spanish and English.

Compulsory:
The publication of at least one research article will be compulsory for both full-time and part-time students.

CONTROL PROCEDURE
The thesis supervisor will keep a record of all the published works in which the PhD student has participated and the degree of collaboration in them. Likewise, the PhD student will notify the Academic Committee of the PhD Programme when the article is accepted for publication in a JCR journal and will send the complete reference when it is published. Before the reading of the thesis, the article must be in press or published.

OPTIONAL

RESEARCH SEMINARS

BASIC DATA
Nº of hours: 60

DESCRIPTION

Justification:
It is essential that doctoral students are informed about the competence and conceptual requirements that research work requires and there is also a need for continuous updating of theoretical and methodological knowledge related to the specific areas of the Doctoral Programme.

Brief description of the activity:
The research seminars include a series of activities aimed at deepening theoretical and methodological aspects relevant to the specific topics of the PhD Programme. The different seminars that can be carried out as part of this training activity are:
      • Seminar in rural planning.
      • Seminar on evaluation design.
      • Seminar in project management.
      • Seminar on quantitative techniques for sustainable development.
      • Seminar on sustainable land management and biodiversity.
      • Seminar on scientific writing.
Each of the seminars will include lectures, group and individual work and research work in which PhD students will apply the knowledge they have acquired. At the end of each seminar, students will defend practical cases that will be submitted for debate. They will be given by people of recognised prestige and, where possible, lecturers from international centres will be invited.

Timetable:
It is advisable to carry out these activities during the first year of the PhD, for full-time students, and during the first and/or second year, for part-time students. The thesis supervisor will plan together with the student the attendance to seminars of interest for the research.
Learning outcomes:
Doctoral students will learn and update their knowledge and learn to analyse, present and discuss results of research projects.

Associated competences:
CB11, CB12, CB14, CA04 and CA06

Languages of instruction:
Spanish and English.

Compulsory:
Optional training activity for all students on the programme regardless of their full-time or part-time dedication.

CONTROL PROCESS
The aspects evaluated in each of the seminars may be the following:
    • Continuous assessment of activities and workshops.
    • Evaluation of practical work.
    • Evaluation of technical and personal skills.
    • Research work carried out by the student.
The weighting of each of the aspects may vary depending on the subject of the seminar. Participation in the seminar is free, subject to prior registration. The student's director will recommend their participation in the seminars and will record their attendance and activity.
