This area of research seeks the relationship between scientific and technical knowledge and the actions to be developed in the public sphere.

These actions are often projects that also try to link the knowledge described with the processes of social orientation and transformation.

Our lines of research in this area are:
  • Planning Models for the Public Sphere
  • The LEADER approach and its adaptation to Latin-America
  • Governance and regional decentralisation
This is one of our most long-standing areas of research, which began more than 25 years ago with various scientific and practical collaborations with universities (UCLA and Berkeley) in the United States. In the field of planning and management of public policies, the objective is to seek to improve political organisation and to contribute to the introduction of innovations and improvements in the institutions involved, mainly in rural/local development policies.

Work in this area involves identifying the elements that continuously define different planning models. In this way, it is possible to understand the different roles played by each of the agents involved in the processes, both politicians and technical planners, as well as organised civil society and the business world. It also studies the risks and opportunities that each planning model brings to the table according to the geographical, political and sectoral context in which it needs to operate, as well as the elements that need to be brought into play. From this perspective, we also work to identify and characterise successful practices for their application in other contexts.

In particular, the different European instruments and policies in the field of regional policy and their adaptation to Latin America.
